Can't Touch20 This

TechCrunch20, a tech conference held by TechCrunch and Jason Calacanis, just announced three additional people for their experts panel. Normally this would not be anything worth mentioning- I probably won't be going to the conference and I won't be representing my company there- but MC Hammer is one of the experts. No. Really. MC Hammer. According to today's post Hammer was an important rap artist who brought hip hop to millions of people. And he is a patriot. And he has a TV show. And, by the way, the is an advisor to the "stealth" startup DanceJam. Apparently "stealth" is a nice way to say that their site is just a splash page with a disco ball on it. This is all made even more strange by the fact that the other two experts announced, Caterina Fake and Rajeev Motwani, are really impressive. Fake was one of Time Magazine’s most 100 most influential people and Motwani is a professor at Stanford's CS department. I guess what I am saying is someone should have said something when they noticed that this post seems less believeable than TechCrunch's April Fools' Day post. Okay, that's probably a stretch, but wow. MC Hammer. Almost all the comments on the post are in some way mocking the choice, or at least joking about Hammer in a friendly manner. A few people were able to look past the parachute pants and Behind The Music and point out how Hammer (doesn't this guy have a real name to use?) could be a good choice because a number of startups are dealing with the music industry. We'll see how it turned out... if everyone can get past the MC Hammer we all have in our minds- an amusing allusion to the 90s- than he will probably have some very interesting insights to offer. Still seems odd though...
