Laptop Lust: Sony VAIO G1

There are few things I appreciate more than a great notebook. I am always on the lookout for the latest and greatest and always have a few models on my "Things to Buy if I Suddenly Become Rich" list, mainly highly priced ultraportables, but also older models from past generations that missed (some day I will own a Sony X505...). For some time I have had my eye on the Asus U1 (aka the U1F) but I am having a tough time getting my hands on an Asus evaluation model. I still am really into the U1 but I have been really impressed with my current toy, the Fujitsu P7230, so I have been (partially) satiated. Right now the newest notebook on my wish list is Sony's G1 ultraportable. This is Sony getting back to the days of the X505 and releasing a 2.1lb system with a carbon fiber body. Wow. It does not look at cool as some of the other ultraportables out there, in fact it looks kind of blocky, but it's definitely a winner. I first heard about it from Dynamism, where it is selling for $2699, though you can bump it up to $3499 if you go with a solid state drive (1.89lbs!!!) or lower it to $2099 if you go with a lower end processor and drop the DVD drive. That's right, Sony found a way to cram an optical drive in there. So yes, you are paying over $2000 for a system with a Core Solo processor, but you have to respect the Sony heritage as well as the carbon fiber body. $2699 is a bit ridiculous but $2100 is moving towards reasonable, at least that is what I am trying to convince myself...
