Valleywag on Digg
Say what you will about Nick Denton and Valleywag, but he put up an interesting post about Digg today. It goes over three reasons why Digg gets its stats wrong and uses the numbers Kevin Rose told Forbes, about 1.5M a day. The three reasons pointed out- Comscore (it says 1.65M a month), Rose's number includes RSS stats, and that tools like Alexa don't work on Firefox, the browser of choice for 70% of Digg users but Comscore says it does work with Firefox. Pretty good points, but I don't think anyone believes tools like Alexa or Comscore to be accurate, they are just the best we have got...
I doubt Digg is doing the sort of numbers they claim, but they are huge and should stay that way for some time, though I have to admit the overall quality of the site, its links, and its comments are all dropping rapidly.
The post had a great disclosure:
Disclosure: Gawker Media is competitive, in business model at least, with Federated Media Publishing, which sells Digg advertising. One could, I guess, see Digg as competitive with Gawker tech sites such as Gizmodo, Lifehacker and Valleywag. Except that Digg is one of the largest external referrers of visitors to those sites.
I am totally in favor of disclosures and I usually find them to be the most interesting part of many blog posts. This one seems particularly indirect but Denton does do a good job of pointing out the obvious- like Digg or not it drives a lot of traffic to Gawker sites.
Disclosure: Techmeme got there first.
